    A/Prof Penelope Allen

    Head, Vitreoretinal Surgical Unit, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital

    Assoc Prof Allen graduated from the University of Melbourne in Medicine and specialised in Ophthalmology. She then sub-specialised in Vitreoretinal surgery. Assoc Prof Allen is a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, with a clinical appointment at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, as head of the Vitreoretinal Surgical Unit.

    Assoc Prof Allen was a Principal Investigator on the Australian Research Council (ARC) Special Research Initiative in Bionic Vision Science and Technology grant to Bionic Vision Australia (BVA). She is the co-recipient of an NHMRC excellence award. Assoc Prof Allen was key to the developing the surgical technique for the suprachoroidal retinal prosthesis, resulting in the first clinical trial of this device in three human patients. For this she was shortlisted for an Australian Eureka prize for interdisciplinary research. She has subsequently led a second trial of a fully implantable device with four patients.

    She has presented over 100 conference posters and talks and has published more than 90 peer reviewed journal articles.

    In 2024 she was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology for services to research and training.

    Abhilash has two decades of experience in impact investing, international development, philanthropy and measurement & evaluation. He began his career in microfinance in India, where he helped set-up one of India’s first impact investing funds – Elevar Equity. Abhilash then worked at the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), where he established its research function. Most recently, Abhilash was Chief Impact Officer at the Paul Ramsay Foundation, where he established the foundation’s impact investing team and strategy.

    Abhilash has a Master’s degree in International Development from the Harvard Kennedy School, and degrees in Commerce and Arts from the University of Melbourne.

    Adrian is the former Chair of both the Federal Government's National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (now known as Housing Australia) and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI). He has held senior positions at Charter Hall, Folkestone, Mirvac, Deutsche Asset Management, Paladin and the Property Council of Australia.

    Alex is a co-founder of Infradebt – a specialist infrastructure debt fund manager. He is a member of the Infradebt Investment Committee and has completed over 55 debt investments in the areas of renewable energy (solar, wind, batteries, behind the meter and off-grid applications), social infrastructure (hospitals, education and other forms of public infrastructure), and a number of other infrastructure investments.

    He has a wealth of knowledge in renewable energy/decarbonisation financing having participated in a multitude of transactions over the last decade.     Andrew is a director of CGI Glass Lewis, a corporate governance advisory firm with over 1,300 Investor clients globally. From 2004 to 2023, Andrew was a director and Chair of G2 Therapies, a spinout from the Garvan Institute. Andrew was also a director and shareholder of Yuan Chuan Radio (sold to Shanghai-listed Orient Securities) and ASX-listed Hostworks Group (sold to Broadcast Australia), amongst other listed and private companies.

    Andrew began his career at Peregrine Investments in Hong Kong in 1997 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, with majors in English and History.

    Andrew resides in Sydney, Australia with his wife and three children.

    Dr. Andy Kuper is an investor and entrepreneur whose Profit with Purpose philosophy has shaped diverse industries and countries. He founded LeapFrog Investments in 2007. Within a decade, Fortune ranked LeapFrog as one of the top 5 Companies to Change the World, alongside Apple and Novartis. In 2022 in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Andy was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for “distinguished service to the impact investing industry, to global business leadership, and to financial inclusion”.

    LeapFrog’s companies now serve 537 million people in Africa and Asia with healthcare, financial tools or climate solutions. Those companies also directly support 241,000 jobs and livelihoods.

    Global investors, including many of the world’s leading financial institutions, have committed several billion dollars to the firm’s growth equity funds. With this backing, LeapFrog’s portfolio companies have grown on average 23% per year since investment. Several have been sold successfully to industry leaders including Prudential Plc, Swiss Re, AXA XL, Allianz, Standard Chartered and Fidelity.

    Andy has been recognised by the Economist Group for demonstrating how “to change the way we invest as individuals, institutions and societies”. He has received global leadership awards from WEF, YPO, IIS, EY and other institutions. He has been a faculty member or visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, Harvard University and Columbia University.

    Born and raised in South Africa, now an Australian, Andy holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has authored two books on globalisation and governance and is co-author of publications with diverse leaders and Nobel laureates.

She headed up finance and clients accounts for Gide, the International French law firm for 10 years in Beijing. She has consulted and worked with brands including Mondelez, L’Oréal, Bank of Indonesia, Reliance, Rhipe-Crayon and more.

    A trained economist, she holds an MBA and is a certified professional coach.

    Dr Ariella Heffernan-Marks is the founder and CEO of Ovum. With a Doctor of Medicine from Macquarie University and a specialised background in Reproductive Biology and Embryology from Monash University. Dr Heffernan-Marks previously worked at the prestigious Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, where she gained invaluable clinical experience and a deep understanding of patient care. She has now commenced her pHD with The George Institute for Global Health and the University of New South Wales, focusing on the role of AI in women’s health. Dr Heffernan-Marks’ will apply this experience, bringing a unique blend of medical expertise and technological innovation to the forefront of women's healthcare in Ovum A.I.

    Dr Heffernan-Marks was awarded the ‘Deans Fellowship Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence’ for her achievements in Reproductive Biology from Monash University in 2016. She also received the Academic Excellence Award for her medical cohort issued by Macquarie University in 2022. In 2023, she was awarded the TOW Randwick Innovation Precinct People’s Choice Award in the Clinical Division. Most recently, she has been awarded the LIFTwomen Best Project Award. Ovum was awarded $20,000 through LIFTWomen to kickstart their crowdfunding journey, and recently won the ‘Enterprise, Big Data and AI’ category at the SXSW Pitch competition, with a ‘high commendation’ in the grand finale.

    Dr Heffernan-Marks has also been a part of the UNSW 10x Health pre-accelerator and SpringBoard enterprises Evolve program, which exclusively chose Ovum to participate in their exclusive cohorts.

    Ben is a Senior Managing Director in Macquarie Asset Management's (MAM's) Solutions Group. He has been responsible for leading the efforts to create investment products that provide an intentional, measurable, positive social impact while delivering financial returns to investors.

    Ben has led the launch of MAM's specialist disability accommodation (SDA) platform in Australia and Green Climate Fund initiatives globally. He has established one of the largest portfolios of purpose-built accommodation for people with disabilities in Australia and is deploying concessional capital to create an electric vehicle solutions platform in India.

    During his tenure with Macquarie, Ben has been involved in a broad range of transactions, including structured capital market transactions, principal acquisitions, and retail structured products, the development of fund and lending products for high-net-worth and hedge fund clients, and the development of the firm's ship finance and export credit capabilities.

    Prior to joining Macquarie, he worked for four years in the tax and audit divisions of PricewaterhouseCoopers and KPMG.

    Ben is the Group Impact Adviser for the Phillips Group, a single family office established by Liz and Anth Phillips in 2017 with the broad goal of increasing access to education and empowering young people to achieve their full potential. In this capacity, Ben advises the Phillips family on philanthropic and mission related investments.

    Ben graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from University of Melbourne in 2002 and was the recipient of the Churchill Fellowship in 2007 to investigate innovative cultural philanthropy in the USA, UK and Canada. In 2019 he graduated from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Company Directors Course.

    Ben is Head of Impact Investing at Paul Ramsay Foundation. Alongside his role at PRF, he holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor and Impact Investor in Residence at the Centre for Social Impact, Flinders University.

    Prior to joining PRF, Ben was Head of Social and Impact Investment at Esmée Fairbairn Foundation – the UK’s largest impact investing foundation. Ben previously established UnLtd’s – the UK’s largest early-stage social enterprise supporter – impact investment department and first funds. Other notable activities in the space include co-authoring the CFA UK’s Impact and Investing Certificate, founding and chairing Australia’s Foundations Group for Impact Investing, co-Chairing the UK’s Social Impact Investors Group and lecturing on Social Finance at Cranfield University and University of Westminster.

    Ben Thornley is Managing Partner and Co-Founder at Tideline, where he leads the firm's client-facing strategic and impact management advisory practice. Since Tideline's inception in 2014, Ben has advised over 120 institutional asset owners and managers globally on the launch of new products and platforms that comprehensively integrate impact and sustainability into each stage of the investment process, from sourcing and screening, through to value creation and reporting. These investors have deployed over US$200 billion of impact capital.

    Prior to Tideline, Ben directed the pioneering research and consulting practice at Pacific Community Ventures (PCV), evaluating the social and economic impact of targeted investments totalling over a billion dollars for clients including the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). Ben also created the Impact Investing Policy Collaborative at PCV, a network of researchers, investors and policymakers from over 30 countries, including Australia, leading to a White House invitation to make the first expert presentation to the Social Impact Investment Taskforce, convened under the UK's G8 Presidency in 2013. Ben cultivated numerous research and convening partnerships at PCV, including with Harvard University, Duke University, the World Economic Forum, and the UK Cabinet Office.

    Ben started his career as a financial journalist, working as the New York correspondent and Managing Editor for several publications covering Australia's superannuation industry. He later moved into government, directing Australia's efforts to promote trade and investment in financial services out of the New York Consulate-General.

    Ben holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked as a teaching assistant in political economy to the former US Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich. He also holds a Bachelor of Communications from University of Technology, Sydney. Ben is the co-author of The Impact Investor: Lessons in Leadership and Strategy for Collaborative Capitalism (Jossey-Bass, 2015), and sits on the Mission Alignment Committee of Azolla Ventures, an early-stage investor in climate tech. Ben was born in New Zealand, raised in Australia, and now resides in Portland, Oregon.

    Ben is an agent for change. He has worked with leading clinicians, academic researchers, and emerging entrepreneurs to educate them on what it takes to commercialise innovation, and nurture entrepreneurial traits in a holistic approach to research translation.

    Ben is the Co-Founder and CEO of Mimetic, a venture studio that collaborates with clinical innovators to co-found and operate medical device companies. Mimetic's mandate is to facilitate the translation of intellectual property from medical research to clinical adoption. He is the Managing Director of Ballistic Ventures, a venture and commercialisation advisory firm, the Industry Innovation Lead for Western Sydney University, and sits on panels for the NSW Medical Devices Fund and the NSW Physical Sciences Fund.

    He was previously the Entrepreneur in Residence for the UNSW Founders Health 10x accelerator and contracts to various organisations including NSW Health, to translate medical research into bedside impact through commercialisation.

    Prior to Mimetic, Ben managed a corporate venture capital vehicle for listed Australian medtech Nanosonics and was the Chief Innovation Officer and Head of Investment Strategy at deep technology incubator Cicada Innovations, where he ran the NSW Medical Devices Commercialisation Training Program for the NSW Office for Health and Medical Research.

    Ben holds a BSc. Biological Sciences (WSU), a Grad. Dip. Biomedical Engineering (UNSW), has attended numerous executive courses including Venture Capital (UC Berkeley), Mergers and Acquisitions (Stanford University) and is a graduate of the Company Directors Course (Australian Institute of Company Directors).

    Carly's career has been defined by working to influence positive social and environmental impacts. She was previously the Impact Investment Forum Program Manager for the Responsible Investment Association Australasia where she drove capacity-building around impact management; a non-Executive Director of B Lab Australia & New Zealand; and before that was the inaugural Director of Engagement and Communications at Impact Investing Australia. Prior to these roles she worked for the Australian Conservation Foundation and for Oxfam on campaigns spanning climate change, environmental sustainability, Indigenous rights, and social justice.

    Caroline is purpose-focused and a passionate advocate for the Boundless vision. Starting her career in private legal practice, she comes to Boundless after six years at Impact Investment Group (a pioneer of Australia’s impact investment sector) as Chief of Staff, leading complex capital transactions, and one of the founding team of Australia’s first 100% impact Venture Capital fund, Giant Leap.

    Caroline is on the advisory board of Tripple, a private investment company using capital as a force for good, and is a director of the Australian Communities Foundation. She was part of the teaching faculty for the 2022 Mastery of Business and Empathy through Small Giants (a family office and Australia’s first B Corporation). She has spent over a decade working with wealth owners on purpose- driven investing, including as a co-founder of Australia’s first next-gen purpose network (New Generation of Giving). Caroline is a graduate of the Sydney Leadership program and an alum of the Australia Vietnam Youth Leadership Dialogue. She holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Technology, Sydney.

As a co-founder of Tideline, she also oversees the firm's strategy and operations and has led many of the firm's consulting engagements with leading foundations, some of the world's largest financial intermediaries, and select ultra-high-net-worth family offices and non-profits.

    Prior to Tideline, Christina was Managing Director at J.P. Morgan where she worked for over 15 years, leading a ratings business and several risk management groups, including for the credit portfolio and emerging markets trading businesses. She also created an innovative methodology for measuring and managing country risk and advised numerous sovereign governments on their public credit ratings. In 2007, Christina created and launched J.P. Morgan's Social Finance business, a novel investment banking unit that published seminal research on impact investing, made proprietary investments in impact funds, and structured and distributed innovative impact products to clients, such as the Global Health Investment Fund, a $100+ million impact investment fund backed by the Gates Foundation. During her time at J.P. Morgan, Christina grew the Social Finance team to eight full-time employees and also managed an internal volunteer corps of more than 2,000 engaged employees.

    Christina currently sits on the CASE i3 and BRAC USA Advisory Boards and has served on several other non-profit boards. She consulted for Ashoka during 2006-07, which solidified her determination to leverage mainstream finance for positive social impact. She earned a MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics, a MA in International Affairs from George Washington University, and a BA in Sociology from University of California, Los Angeles.

    Prior to her appointment as CEO of Investing in Women, Ms Birdsey was a senior executive at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, leading multiple teams responsible for development policy and programming across diverse areas, including governance, sustainable development, and humanitarian response, as well as DFAT’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She served as Australia’s Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian High Commission Malaysia, and was posted in Jakarta, Indonesia and in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

    Ms Birdsey holds a Masters in International Relations from the University of Sydney, and a Graduate Diploma in Economics from the University of New England.

Helen has 25 years of venture capital experience. Prior to joining AC Ventures, she started her VC career as part of the founding team at GGV Capital, and served as a Partner at Qiming Ventures.

    Helen has a proven investment track record, having had 10 exits (7 IPOs and 3 M&As) among her portfolio companies. Some of her exits include Tudou and QuantaSing, which listed on NASDAQ, and Mobike (acquired by Meituan). She also led the investment in Akulaku, an Indonesia-based fintech company that has reached unicorn status.

    She currently leads Climate & Sustainability investing at AC Ventures, and serves on the boards of startups in energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and mobility.

    Helen graduated with a B.A. degree from Oxford University and a M.B.A. from INSEAD. She also has an E.M.B.A. degree from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in China. She is a Kauffman Fellow, and also participated in the China European International Business School (“CEIBS”) venture capital program.

    Dr John McKinnon began his career in the finance industry. After holding several positions in funds management, asset consulting and superannuation consulting, John co-founded the Australian office of Grantham Mayo van Otterloo LLC in 1995, growing the business to over $10b in total funds under management.

    In 2005 John joined overseas aid and development charity TEAR Australia, where he managed first the NSW office and then TEAR’s Australian operations. During this time John completed his PhD in social enterprise and development, investigating the intersection of finance and poverty alleviation.

    In 2019 John co-founded Infrastructure Access Managers (IAM), to facilitate investment in unlisted infrastructure by impact investors. IAM’s first fund enabled IAM’s directors to play a significant role in facilitating the transition of the Port of Newcastle to a low carbon future.

    In 2020, John led a philanthropic consortium to save Australian Associated Press (AAP) from closure. Through IAM, John is currently working on a Media Impact Fund to promote independent media, particularly in regional Australia.

    Since 2012 John, together with his wife Sue, has managed the McKinnon Family Foundation, a private ancillary fund that focuses on climate change mitigation. Both John and Sue are keen to maximise use of their assets, which means investing the corpus as much as possible in line with their values and the mission of the foundation. Hence they have been at the forefront of impact investing.

    John sits on a number of boards including The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility and AAP and is chair of The Australia Institute.

In addition to these portfolio management responsibilities, Paul leads the implementation, measurement and reporting of Palisade Impact’s impact and ESG targets portfolio-wide.

    Paul has over 30 years of private equity investment experience including with 3i in the United Kingdom and with AMP and Ironbridge in Australia.​ After six years as a Director of AMP Private Equity, where he led several of Australia's leading management buyouts and infrastructure transactions, Paul left to join Gresham in 2001 as a Director.​ In 2003 Paul became one of the Founding Partners of Ironbridge which successfully raised, invested and realised over $1.5 billion in commitments from leading local and global institutional investors. Paul is an experienced company director, having held seats on numerous listed and unlisted company boards.

    Paul obtained a first-class Honours degree in Modern Languages from Cambridge University. Paul is a former Treasurer and Director of the Australian Investment Council.

Rachel started her career as a systems and project engineer for Toshiba Corporation in Japan, where she was involved in the implementation of various smart grid (energy management, battery, solar) projects for governments, research institutions and utilities with a focus on key Southeast Asian markets. While at Toshiba, Rachel also supported Toshiba's regional business development activities for Landis+Gyr, then a newly acquired subsidiary and leader in integrated energy management solutions and smart meters.
